Obon is a Buddhist observance to honor the memories of loved ones celebrated as a gathering of joy. In remembering the deceased, Buddhists acknowledge and express gratitude for the influence of the deceased on our lives. It is an opportunity to express gratitude and love to all who have passed on. Ekoji celebrates this important occasion with an evening of old and new Japanese folk dances and a lighting of memorial candles on Saturday evening the 10th and with a service in the temple on Sunday the 11th beginning at 11:00am.
The Ekoji Buddhist Temple of the greater Washington, DC area supports the practice of Shin Buddhists throughout the region and was founded in 1981 by the late philanthropist Reverend Dr. Yehan Numata and the late Reverend Kenryu T. Tsuji.
The temple offers various programs and activities that help each
participant walk the path of a Buddhist, including adult services each Sunday at 11am, children's services, Dharma School for children and adults, Buddhist seminars, and meditation classes. The Temple is located just five-and-half miles outside the Capital Beltway two-tenths of a mile from the intersection of Burke Lake Road and Route 7100 (Fairfax County Parkway), towards Burke Lake Park.
